What is DVD?
DVD is a acronym that stands
for “digital video disc”. DVDs themselves are discs that have music, video, or other media embedded
on them that can be played back on DVD players.
DVDs replaced VHS tapes as the
most popular way to release movies to mass audiences for sale and for viewing; hence the popularity
of the VHS DVD
converter.
Nowadays, DVDs are slowly
being replaced by Blue Ray high definition Disc technology, but DVDs of new movies are still being
released and sold, meaning that they are not completely through yet.

A DVD looks just like a CD, but they are
capable of holding a lot more media. Some DVDs have music tracks on them. Likewise, some Cds can actually be
produced as “enhanced discs” that have DVD material on them. DVDs superseded VHS tapes for several reasons.
For one, they are extremely cheap to duplicate
and produce. Two, they are digital, and thus are capable of a much more defined picture than VHS tapes are capable
of. Third, DVDs are easier to use. You can navigate through chapters on a DVD, plus they do not need to be rewound
like a VHS tape. These all work together to make DVDs a lot more efficient and practical.
In order to play a DVD, you need to have a DVD
player. Most computers nowadays ship with a built in DVD player in them, but you can also buy an actual, dedicated
DVD player at just about any store that sells electronics. Some DVD players are more expensive, especially the ones
that are capable of playing Blue Ray discs. However, regular DVD players are relatively inexpensive, and they are
getting cheaper as new technologies emerge onto the scene.
While DVDs are slowly being replaced, this
does not mean that they are becoming obsolete. They can still be viewed on newer players and on computers, and a
lot of people still buy DVDs because they do not see the need for a better picture or better definition. While DVDs
will no doubt be outpaced at some point, they are definitely still the most popular way to watch movies at home.
They are also regularly rented, sold, and recorded.
You can buy a DVD burner for your computer
that allows you to create your own DVDs, and a lot of people take advantage of this technology to make home video
DVDs that they can watch later on.
